Define a Problem
My job was to model each part of the train using Inventor using dimensioned sketches, then assemble the train.
Generate Concepts
I began modeling by using the sketches and their dimensions, trying to use the least amount of extrusions, revolutions, lofts, etc. possible. Although many of the dimensions were hard to read and put into inventor, I persevered with the help of some classmates.
Develop a Solution
Construct and Test Prototype
Evaluate the Solution
Through a vigorous series of arguments and debates with my dog Khaleesi, we decided to change my design from all gold to keeping some of it the original ABS Plastic color, although all gold is normally my style. she did think all of the parts were done well, but my parents thought that the Cow Catcher could be a little wider, to protect the wheels.
Present the Solution
This train project was by far the hardest project I’ve ever had to do for any kind of class. This, however, doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. The level of satisfaction and relief I have finishing this on time is quite high, and I am immensely proud of myself. There were many challenges along the way, especially with modeling each part. It was incredibly difficult to model them on Inventor with the packet of dimensions we got, as some were unclear and I was forced to improvise on some, as well as seek help from friends, teachers, and the internet. The IDW files did not prove to be hard, neither the assembly, but the IDW’s did teach me a few things. First, section views are important and helpful because they help someone see the inside of an object, often revealing holes, threads, and different screw tops that one might now be able to see without it. Although holes are dimensioned using symbols so someone can easily understand the dimensions of a hole quickly and efficiently, being able to look at the hole does help. Auxiliary views are used to see alternate views now shown in the front, right, and top side views, and allows you to dimension and view them to get a better understanding of the part. Broken views are used to shorten long parts, and are only shortened in parts that don’t have any sort of details or important holes, pieces, etc. on them. I also had to place tolerances on an IDW, which are important because it allows room for mistakes, as nothing is perfect. While this project did better my skills in inventor, I am happy it is over and I actually finished it.
